Data Insights: Ohio’s Teacher Workforce

Check out ODE’s recently released Data Insights edition, Ohio’s Teacher Workforce that looks at trends affecting Ohio’s schools.  Data available suggests that teacher shortages primarily are localized to certain regions, subjects, and grade bands. Licensure and attrition data are also highlighted. For example, in 2021-2022, there were more than 43,000 individuals with active teaching credentials in Ohio who were not employed in a public school as a teacher or other staff member.

As you review the data, it may be of help to use the following processing questions to organize your thoughts and action steps. These questions can be used individually or with a small team.

  1. One of the headlines of this report is that this data varies by local context. Find your district’s region and typology and look at the trend data. What do you notice? Any surprises or affirmations?

  2. Licensure clearly impacts these trends. How does that affect your school and/or district? What are the implications for your local recruiting efforts?

  3. Who else in your district should see this data?

  4. Looking at all the listed resources, where do you think your district thrives? Where does your district have challenges?
