3 Research Why’s: Human Capital Essentials for Principals

The recent findings from the Wallace Foundation reinforce how profoundly principal quality matters when it comes to student outcomes. Research also shows that principals greatly impact your district’s abilities to hire, grow and retain staff.

Why focus on human capital practices with principals?

1) The majority of a school’s budget is spent on its people.

People are, by far, the greatest expenditure for school systems. Throughout history, districts spend 80+% of their budgets on people (salary and fringes).

On average, 75%+ of a district’s operational expenditures are attributed to individual schools where oversight falls on the principal.

2) Leaders account for 70% of variance in employee engagement.

Just as great teachers create enthusiasm for meaningful learning experiences for their students, great principals create and maintain high levels of employee engagement – critical to employee retainment.

3) The Human Capital pool in education is shrinking. The quality of your leaders’ human capital practices drives your ability to recruit and hire.

From 2010 through 2018, there was a 33% decline in enrollment and a 28 percent decline in students completing teacher preparation programs.
